Supporting Investors in Japan’s Energy Transition and Decarbonisation

17 October 2024
In collaboration with Nissay Asset Management, AIGCC hosted two roundtables and a site visit as part of the Financial Services Agency’s (FSA) Japan Weeks in Tokyo on 3-4 October. These events were designed to drive greater private sector financing for Japan’s Energy Plan and support industrial decarbonisation across Asia.

The Policy Roundtable brought together key representatives from government ministries, agencies, and international and domestic institutional investors. Discussions centered around expectations for the upcoming Japan Strategic Energy Plan, with investors advocating for a more ambitious approach to achieving Japan’s decarbonisation goals.

The Asset Owners Working Group meeting explored the challenges and opportunities asset owners face in financing industrial decarbonisation in both developed and emerging markets across Asia. Insights were shared on the investment outlook for decarbonisation technologies and renewables, alignment with market-specific transition finance frameworks, and the role of sovereign wealth funds (SWFs) in unlocking investment potential.

With support from the Fukuoka Prefectural Government, AIGCC also organised a site visit to Kyushu. The itinerary included a tour of the Port of Kitakyushu, home to the Green Energy Port Hibiki, a logistics hub that supports the entire lifecycle of offshore wind energy. Participants also visited Kyushu University to explore how its hydrogen research has played a pivotal role in shaping national policy, and met with the Fukuoka Prefectural Government to learn how the hydrogen and ammonia supply chain is central to local policy initiatives. These visits offered investors deeper insights into local government initiatives and their crucial role in advancing Japan’s Green Transformation (GX) industry policy.

The week’s events fostered productive dialogue and opened new avenues for public and private sector collaboration, advancing Japan’s path towards its energy transition and decarbonisation targets.
